Flat Lay Product Photography

The look of product photography is changing. Flat lay product photography has been one of the biggest changes to product photography due to the evolution of social media and cell phone cameras. Across the board, a wide range of eCommerce sites and businesses use flat lay for its immediate appeal and distinct look.

What Is A Flat Lay Product?

A flat lay photograph is always photographed from above. Beneath, there’s a flat surface that serves as the backdrop and staging ground for the products. The products are items that are in an arrangement so they lay in the position that shows the best side to the camera lens. To emphasize, there is one item that is the clear central focus of the shot. Other product sizes or colors of the same item are placed around it. Sometimes random items are placed around it to complement of contrast the product that is the focus. You could call them ‘flat lay props’ that are only there to highlight a certain atmosphere around the product.

The bird’s eye perspective is what many artists consider the style’s defining traits. Without a doubt, Apple Computes is well known for this style of flat lay product photography. It does not have to be a true bird’s eye. Photographers sometimes choose to angle the photo slightly if it gives the subjects of the photo a better light.
